Use data to help grow – Too much of using data to “help businesses grow” is about predicting (guessing) revenue or profit in five years. This is kind of fun intellectually (and there are cleverly named tools like “Crystal Ball” to do this), but it’s less useful than finding real things that we can do today or in the near future that will meaningfully impact the business. This means focusing on why people cancel, how they interact with signup pages, etc.

This is a great, simple overview of how approach "analytics". As complex as we make it, it really just comes down to a couple priorities.

The arbiters of the new social hierarchy have names like Klout, PeerIndex and Twitalyzer. Each company essentially works the same way: They feed public data, mostly from Twitter, but also from sites like LinkedIn and Facebook, into secret formulas and then generate scores that gauge users' influence. Think of it as the credit score of friendship or, as PeerIndex calls it, "the S&P of social relationships."

This is another article that's going to get passed around via email today by well-intentioned folks trying to figure out how to automate "influencers".

Beware the social media gurus talking about "influence" and "influencers". It's voodoo right now.

Incredible: Watch volunteers translate Egyptian phone messages in real-time

Don’t believe in the power of crowdsourcing yet? Well, if initiatives such as Wikipedia and Ushahidi haven’t convinced you, the video below should pretty much negate anyone’s doubts about just how monumental a force crowdsourcing has become.

Earlier today, in response to the continued blackout of the Internet in Egypt, Google and Twitter announced that they had set up phone numbers in Egypt for protesters to call into, that would then automatically be turned into voicemail messages, that would then be tweeted out on the account @Speak2Tweet. Of course, the immediate point of this system is not to help organize within Egypt, but hopefully to offer a way for Egyptians to literally speak to the rest of the world.
